When there is no griha pravesh muhurat in 2026

These periods close dates even when the nakshatra and tithi are right. Start and end dates are for New Delhi.

Adhika Jyeshtha (Adhik Maas)17 May – 15 JunThe extra lunar month, Purushottam Maas — not used for new beginnings.
Guru asta (Jupiter combust)15 Jul – 12 AugGuru is too close to the Sun to be seen — no griha pravesh until it rises again.
Shukra asta (Venus combust)12 Oct – 29 OctShukra is too close to the Sun to be seen — no griha pravesh until it rises again.

What is a griha pravesh muhurat?

Griha Pravesh is the ceremony of entering a new home for the first time. The muhurat combines a fixed or gentle (dhruva or mridu) nakshatra, a good tithi, an allowed weekday and an allowed lunar month, with Jupiter and Venus both visible.

How the 2026 dates are chosen

Nakshatra and tithi. Eight nakshatras are used: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. Allowed tithis are Shukla Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi, and Krishna Pratipada, Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami and Ekadashi — never the Rikta tithis (4, 9, 14), Ashtami or Amavasya.

Weekday and month. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are allowed; Sunday and Tuesday are not. Only six lunar months (Amanta) qualify: Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Kartika and Margashirsha. Chaitra, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwina and Pausha are avoided, as is any Adhik Maas.

Guru and Shukra. Jupiter and Venus must both be visible. While either is combust (asta), no griha pravesh muhurat is given, which is why whole weeks disappear from the list even in a good month.

In 2026 the nakshatras that give the most dates are Uttara Ashadha (8), Anuradha (6), Uttara Bhadrapada (5). All windows start and end at the exact moment a nakshatra, tithi, yoga or karana changes, so they are given to the minute.

Tips

  • The first entry is traditionally made with a kalash of water, carried in by the lady of the house, right foot first.
  • A Vastu Shanti or Ganesh puja is usually done on the same day, inside the muhurat window.
  • If the house is a rented or resale home moving-in rather than a new construction, many families still follow this list.

The dates are checked against Drik Panchang: for 2026–27, 99.8% of our windows match and none of theirs is missing. See how we calculate.

Frequently asked questions

How many griha pravesh dates are there in 2026?

There are 37 griha pravesh dates in 2026 for New Delhi, from 6 February (Friday) to 30 December (Wednesday). December has the most (8), and January, August, September, October have none.

Which 2026 griha pravesh dates fall on a weekend?

Can I do griha pravesh on a Sunday?

Not by these rules — Sunday and Tuesday are excluded. If a weekend is essential, look for a Saturday in the table.

Why are some months completely empty?

Only six lunar months are used for griha pravesh, and Jupiter or Venus being combust closes more dates. The blocked-periods table on this page shows both for this year.

Is the same muhurat used for a new office or shop?

Many people use the griha pravesh list for an office or shop opening too, but some panchangs give a separate business-opening muhurat with slightly different rules.
