Chhath Puja – Sandhya Arghya

The main day, on Kartika Shukla Shashthi: offerings (arghya) are made to the setting sun from riverbanks and ponds.

The four days of Chhath

Chhath is one of the strictest Hindu festivals. The main day, Shashthi, is part of a four-day sequence:

  • Nahay Khay (two days before) — devotees bathe in a river and eat one satvik meal of rice, chana dal and lauki.
  • Kharna (the day before) — a day-long fast broken in the evening with rasiya-kheer and roti, after which the 36-hour nirjala fast begins.
  • Sandhya Arghya (the main day) — offerings to the setting sun, standing in water, with thekua, fruit and sugarcane in bamboo soops.
  • Usha Arghya (the next morning) — offerings to the rising sun, after which the fast is broken.

Where Chhath is celebrated

Chhath is the biggest festival of Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh, and of the Madhesi community in Nepal. It is now also celebrated on ghats in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and other cities wherever people from these regions live, and Bihar and Jharkhand declare holidays for it.

Thekua and Chhath prasad

Thekua — a crisp sweet of wheat flour, jaggery and ghee, made at home in a clean kitchen — is the signature prasad, along with rice laddoos, bananas, coconuts, sugarcane and seasonal fruit.

Planning ahead? Chhath Puja 2026 falls on 15 November (Sunday).
