What is Ekadashi?

Ekadashi is the eleventh lunar day (tithi) of each fortnight, so it comes twice a month — once in Shukla paksha and once in Krishna paksha. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and devotees fast from grains and beans, keep a night vigil or chant, and break the fast (parana) on the next day, Dwadashi, after sunrise.

Why some Ekadashis appear twice

When the Ekadashi tithi doesn't touch sunrise on any day (kshaya) or spans two sunrises, there are two days on which it can be observed. Smarta households (most families) fast on the first; Vaishnava and Sanyasi followers observe the second, called Gauna Ekadashi. Both days are shown in the list where this happens.

The most important Ekadashis

  • Nirjala Ekadashi — the strictest fast, without even water; said to equal all 24 Ekadashis.
  • Devshayani Ekadashi — Vishnu goes to sleep; Chaturmas begins.
  • Devutthana (Prabodhini) Ekadashi — Vishnu wakes; the wedding season and Tulasi Vivah begin.
  • Mokshada Ekadashi — also Gita Jayanti in many traditions.
  • Putrada Ekadashi — prayed on by couples wishing for children.

What can be eaten on an Ekadashi fast?

Grains, rice, wheat and beans are avoided. Fruit, milk, nuts, potatoes, sabudana and kuttu or singhara flour are commonly eaten; some keep a nirjala fast without water. Customs vary — follow your family's tradition and your doctor's advice.

When should the Ekadashi fast be broken?
