Dussehra – Vijayadashami

Ravana effigies are burnt, Durga idols are immersed, and the day is considered auspicious for starting new ventures.

What Dussehra celebrates

Dussehra marks two victories of good over evil: Lord Rama's defeat of Ravana in the Ramayana, and Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. It falls on Dashami, the tenth lunar day of the bright fortnight of Ashvin, right after the nine nights of Navratri.

How Dussehra is celebrated

  • Ramlila and Ravana Dahan — towering effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad are burnt at sunset across North India.
  • Durga Visarjan — idols are immersed in rivers and the sea, especially in Bengal, after Sindoor Khela.
  • Mysuru Dasara — a ten-day state festival ending in the Jamboo Savari elephant procession.
  • Ayudha Puja and Vidyarambham — tools and vehicles are worshipped, and young children begin their education.
  • Shami puja and exchanging Shami or Apta leaves as "gold" in Maharashtra.

An auspicious day for new beginnings

Vijayadashami is one of the three and a half most auspicious days (sade teen muhurat) in many traditions, so people choose it to buy vehicles, gold or property, start a business, or begin learning.

Planning ahead? Dussehra 2026 falls on 20 October (Tuesday).
