What Karwa Chauth is
Karwa Chauth is observed on Chaturthi, the fourth lunar day of the waning fortnight of Kartika (purnimanta calendar), about nine days before Diwali. Married women — and increasingly unmarried women and husbands too — keep a nirjala fast, without food or water, for the well-being and long life of their spouse. It is most widely observed in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
Rituals through the day
- Sargi — a pre-dawn meal, traditionally prepared by the mother-in-law, eaten before sunrise.
- The fast — no food or water from sunrise until moonrise.
- Evening puja — women gather in festive attire, listen to the Karwa Chauth katha and pass the puja thali in a circle.
- Moonrise — the moon is viewed through a sieve, water is offered from the karwa (earthen pot), and the husband offers the first sip of water to end the fast.
