About Guru Nanak Jayanti
Guru Nanak Jayanti, or Gurpurab, celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru, born in 1469 at Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan). It is celebrated on Kartika Purnima, the full moon of the month of Kartika, and is one of the most important days in the Sikh calendar.
How Gurpurab is celebrated
- Akhand Path — a continuous 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, ending on the morning of Gurpurab.
- Nagar Kirtan — a procession led by the Panj Pyare a day or two before, with kirtan and gatka.
- Prabhat Pheris — early-morning processions singing hymns in the days leading up to the festival.
- Langar — free community meals served to everyone at gurdwaras.
- Gurdwaras are lit up, and the Golden Temple in Amritsar draws lakhs of devotees.
Dev Deepawali on the same day
Kartika Purnima is also Dev Deepawali, the "Diwali of the gods", when the ghats of Varanasi are lit with lakhs of diyas, and Kartik Snan, the holy dip in the Ganga, is taken.
